Abstract
However, the rapid growth of Malawi's population over the past several decades is undermining these gains. Malawi is one of the fastest-growing countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with its population more than tripling over the past 40 years and expected to triple again within the next 25 years. This growth is posing legitimate questions about the linkage between population growth and the ability of Malawians to access basic needs such as nutrition, shelter, health, and education. The Catholic Church in Malawi is concerned with population issues in so far as they negatively affect people's livelihoods. The Church believes that marriage counsellors play a crucial role in addressing these issues, as they are instrumental in helping youth, married couples, and other stakeholders in the Church ministry to understand population and family planning issues in the context of the social teachings of the Catholic Church. However, there are substantial gaps in currently available tools and resources for marriage counsellors, including outdated books and a lack of harmonization regarding resource books across the ECM's eight dioceses. The Catholic Bishops believe that this booklet is an important step towards addressing these gaps. The booklet is intended to help marriage counsellors provide more effective support and guidance to congregants on issues related to reproduction, planning of families, and responsible parenthood. The Church is grateful to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development (MoFEPD) and its partners for providing technical and financial support towards the realization of this booklet. The booklet is divided into seven chapters, including an introduction, the role of marriage counsellors in the Catholic Church today, what every Catholic must know about marriage, responsible parenthood, family planning, methods of family planning, and a conclusion. The overall goal of the government's population policy is to improve standards of living and quality of life for people in Malawi, which cannot be achieved without addressing the negative impacts of population growth on education services, health services, agriculture, land use, and food sustainability, as well as the economy, labour force, and employment. High fertility rates and family size are the major factors contributing to the growth of Malawi's population. Therefore, Malawians ought to be more aware and active about issues related to population growth, family planning, and development. The Catholic Church is committed to promoting the dignity of the human person and is concerned with population issues in so far as they negatively affect people's livelihoods. Marriage counsellors should understand the linkages between population growth, responsible parenthood, and development, and provide guidance to congregants on these issues. The Catholic Church's social teachings emphasize the importance of responsible parenthood and family planning. The Church teaches that couples have a right to decide the number and spacing of their children, and that they should take responsibility for their actions. The Church also emphasizes the importance of education and family planning in reducing poverty and improving living standards. The booklet aims to provide marriage counsellors with the knowledge and skills they need to provide effective support and guidance to congregants on these issues. The booklet is a valuable resource for marriage counsellors in Malawi, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of population and family planning issues from a Catholic perspective. It is intended to help marriage counsellors provide more effective support and guidance to congregants on issues related to reproduction, planning of families, and responsible parenthood. The booklet is a step towards addressing the gaps in currently available tools and resources for marriage counsellors, and towards promoting the dignity of the human person in Malawi.
