Abstract
The program focuses on three key areas: producer associations, cooperatives, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The initiative targets over 12,000 cacao producers, representing 25% of the country's total producers, and provides training and accompaniment to improve their financial capacity. The program addresses several challenges faced by cacao producers, including limited access to capital, poor financial management, and lack of transparency. TechnoServe's strategy involves providing training and accompaniment to producers and cooperatives to improve their access to financing. The program also focuses on building the capacity of SMEs to access credit and improve their financial management. The initiative has been implemented in several regions, including San Martín, Huánuco, and Ucayali. In San Martín, the program worked with 10,000 cacao producers and their associations to increase productivity and market alternatives. The project was funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and benefited 18 cooperatives of producers seeking better markets. The program's activities included developing the management, debt management, and financial capacities of producers and cooperatives, ensuring the confidence of international financial institutions (IFIs), and establishing relationships with financial institutions and markets to ensure transparent payment mechanisms. The program also provided accompaniment in negotiation processes. The impact of the program was significant, with $0.6 million in loans to producers to improve productivity, $2.513,497 in working capital for cooperatives, and $1.1 million in capital investments. The program also resulted in a 30% increase in productivity, the implementation of transparent financial and operational systems, the restructuring of $1.2 million in debt, and a reduction of $0.7 million. Additionally, the program generated $8.5 million in additional sales, representing 38% of the total sales of $22.0 million. The program's success can be attributed to its focus on building the capacity of producers and cooperatives, as well as its emphasis on transparency and financial management. The program's use of the CREATE methodology, which involves connecting, reflecting, engaging, activating, trying, and empowering, has been effective in building the capacity of producers and cooperatives. The program's impact has been significant, with a 30% increase in productivity and the implementation of transparent financial and operational systems. The program has also generated additional sales and improved the financial management of producers and cooperatives.
