Abstract
Women participate in various stages of the cacao value chain, including production, processing, and commercialization. However, their involvement is often limited to specific areas, such as post-harvest processing, commercialization, and transformation. The cacao industry has experienced a significant growth in recent years, with an exponential increase in the production of artisanal chocolate. This growth has been accompanied by an increase in the participation of women in the cacao industry, particularly in the areas of associations, cooperatives, and small businesses. Women's involvement in the industry has transcended local borders, with many participating in national and international events. Despite the progress made, there are still several challenges that hinder the development of the artisanal chocolate industry. These challenges include limited access to technical training, high-quality inputs, and equipment. Additionally, there is a lack of information exchange and a shortage of skilled labor. However, women in the cacao industry have made significant strides in recent years, with many participating in local, regional, national, and international events. One notable example of women's success in the cacao industry is the case of San Martín, where eight artisanal chocolate businesses have achieved high sales and have access to high-level technical training. These businesses have also participated in major national and international events and have benefited from technological exchanges that allow them to adapt and implement best practices from other countries. The success of these businesses is a testament to the potential of women in the cacao industry and highlights the importance of supporting their development and growth. The growth of the artisanal chocolate industry has also been driven by the increasing demand for high-quality, unique, and innovative products. This demand has created opportunities for women in the cacao industry to develop new products and to improve their technical skills. However, there is still a need for greater investment in technical training and equipment to support the growth of the industry.
