Abstract
The program, which began in May 2014 and is set to end in February 2016, targets 21,000 beneficiaries, consisting of 3,000 households, over a period of 22 months. The program's primary objective is to help food-insecure households meet their immediate needs and rebuild their livelihoods, while simultaneously strengthening the dairy sector value chain to improve availability and access to nutritious milk products. To achieve this, the program focuses on six key areas: opportunities to rebuild savings and livelihoods, sustainable rehabilitation of pastureland, improved access to nutritious animal feed, strengthened animal health and nutrition, increased availability and accessibility of local dairy products, and improved hygiene in dairy production. During the reporting period of October to December 2015, the program achieved several notable milestones. These include conducting joint technical supervision of 12 auxiliary para-veterinarians, carrying out technical monitoring of the rehabilitation and construction work on five mini dairy collection and processing centers, and monitoring the activities of surveillance committees in pastoral areas. Additionally, the program provided technical support and monitoring of cheese production by seven women's dairy processing groups, supported the development of business and action plans for these groups, and conducted a performance evaluation of 154 micro-enterprises. The program also made significant progress in the area of animal production, with 160 producers successfully treating and storing a significant harvest of hay, which will be critical for animal health during the upcoming lean season. Furthermore, the program trained and retrained 265 micro-entrepreneurs in business management and disbursed 26,532,610 FCFA (approximately USD $44,970) to 133 micro-entrepreneurs as part of a second round of support funds. In terms of geographic focus, the program is concentrated in the Filingué Department, Tillabéri region of Niger, with a specific emphasis on the villages of Toukounous Arzika, Toukounous Station, and Banguir. The program's beneficiaries are primarily agro-pastoral households, with a focus on women-headed households and vulnerable populations. The program's performance summary indicates that, as of the reporting period, 1,204 individuals (172 households) had been reached under the program's objectives, with a cumulative total of 8,134 individuals (1,162 households) reached since the program's inception. The program's indicators, including the number of animals benefiting from livestock activities and the number of people benefiting from livestock activities, disaggregated by sex, also show significant progress. Overall, the MADARA program is making significant strides in enhancing food security and strengthening the livelihoods of vulnerable households in the Filingué Department, Niger. The program's focus on animal production, dairy sector value chain strengthening, and community-based initiatives is yielding positive results, and its continued implementation is expected to have a lasting impact on the region.
