Abstract
The program is structured to address the unique challenges faced by young people in South Africa, where HIV and other infections, as well as early and unintended pregnancy, are significant concerns. The program's core messages emphasize the importance of choosing a safe and healthy sex life, including the right to say "no" to sexual attention and sex at any time, using condoms correctly, being honest and communicating well in sexual relationships, respecting one's own and others' well-being, knowing one's HIV and STI status, and being part of a community that stops gender harm and violence. The program is divided into several lessons, each with a specific focus and set of activities designed to help learners consolidate and deepen their reflection on their goals and how to achieve them. Lesson 11.1, "My priorities and life goals," is one such lesson that helps learners link their priorities and goals to the choices they make now and for the future, with particular attention to their values around sexual and reproductive health. During this lesson, learners will engage in activities that help them reflect on their interests, values, and skills, and set goals for the short, medium, and long term. These goals will include not only academic and work-related goals but also personal goals, such as relationships, marriage, and starting a family. Learners will also think about how SRH issues, such as early or unexpected pregnancy, can impact their goals and plans. The program's structure includes opportunities for learners to build good knowledge, healthy values, and attitudes, and to encourage good decision-making about safe and healthy sexuality. The activities are designed to be engaging and interactive, allowing learners to share information and have discussions with their peers, family, and friends. The program's content is based on factual, reliable information and truths about sexuality education, and is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. The program's core messages and activities are intended to be reinforced throughout the activities, and learners are encouraged to use these messages to remind themselves and their peers of what they should know about choosing a safe and healthy sex life. Overall, Sexuality Education in Life Orientation is a comprehensive program that aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. The program's structure, content, and activities are designed to be engaging and interactive, and to provide learners with the tools they need to make healthy choices about their sex lives. The program's focus on HIV and other infections, as well as early and unintended pregnancy, is particularly relevant in the South African context, where these issues are significant concerns. The program's emphasis on the importance of choosing a safe and healthy sex life, including the right to say "no" to sexual attention and sex at any time, using condoms correctly, being honest and communicating well in sexual relationships, respecting one's own and others' well-being, knowing one's HIV and STI status, and being part of a community that stops gender harm and violence, is also consistent with the country's national HIV and STI prevention and treatment guidelines.
