Abstract
The district is situated in the western part of the country, bordering Turkmenistan to the north and Iran to the west. The terrain is characterized by arid deserts, mountains, and valleys, with limited access to basic services such as healthcare, roads, and education. The district has a diverse ethnic composition, with the majority of the population belonging to the Pashtun tribe. Other ethnic groups present in the area include the Tajik, Uzbek, and Hazara. The district is also home to several tribes, including the Alizai, Khilji, and Noorzai. The local security situation is complex, with the presence of various armed groups, including the Afghan Local Police (ALP) and the National Directorate of Security (NDS). The district's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with crops such as wheat, barley, and cotton being the main sources of income. However, the agricultural sector is facing challenges due to soil degradation, limited access to irrigation, and a lack of market access. The district also has a significant number of livestock, including sheep, goats, and cattle. The Qala-i-Naw District Profile was developed by the Stability in Key Areas (SIKA)-West program, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The program aims to improve stability and pave the way for transition in the western provinces of Afghanistan. The district profile provides background information on the district's geography, demography, ethnic composition, and local security situation, as well as an overview of the district's economy and development projects. The profile was developed through a collaborative effort between the SIKA-West program and local stakeholders, including the district governor's office, the Directorate of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (DRRD), and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The information was gathered through interviews with community members, influential tribal leaders, and members of the District Development Assembly (DDA). The district profile highlights several challenges facing the Qala-i-Naw District, including limited access to basic services, a lack of market access, and a complex local security situation. However, it also identifies opportunities for development, including the potential for agricultural growth and the need for improved infrastructure. The SIKA-West program has identified several key areas for intervention in the Qala-i-Naw District, including the development of infrastructure, the improvement of agricultural productivity, and the enhancement of market access. The program is working closely with local stakeholders to implement these interventions and improve the stability and development of the district. Overall, the Qala-i-Naw District Profile provides a comprehensive overview of the district's geography, demography, economy, and development challenges. It highlights the need for improved infrastructure, agricultural productivity, and market access, and identifies opportunities for development and growth in the district.
