Abstract
This guide describes a participatory process aimed at helping an environmental program: (1) empower people to take action; (2) build on what people are already doing correctly; (3) develop practical methods to measure behavior change; (4) identify intermediate indicators of a program or project"s impact; (5) develop more effective education, communication, and promotional strategies; and (6) ensure that equity issues are addressed. Section I of the guide describes the participatory process for selecting target behaviors and provides a conceptual framework for the methodology. Part II recounts a case study on applying the process in order to identify target behaviors and develop education and communication strategies for an environmental project in Ecuador. It provides a more indepth description of how the steps of the participatory process are implemented in a real-life setting. (Author abstract, modified)
