Abstract
An introductory section provides an overview of the series, gives background on USAID"s adoption of sustainability as a cornerstone of its development assistance strategy, and challenges some myths and misconceptions about sustainable development and USAID"s commitment to the concept. The main text opens with a summary of "what works" in AG/NRM development and discusses the meaning of sustainability in this sector -- that resources should be used so as to maintain resource flows for future generations and to enable ecosystems to maintain output in the long term. Subsequent sections discuss cross-cutting issues (e.g., institutions and policies, politics, economics, environmental health, and research) and sustainability as related to agriculture, integrated pest management, and forestry and agroforestry; in some instances, case studies of USAID interventions are included. A final section lists tools, many of them now in widespread use, developed to assist in sustainability analysis. Includes bibliography.
