USAID. MISSION TO TUNISIA
Project to institutionalize a Government of Tunisia (GOT) capability to acquire and manage technology, especially in the field of engineering, by enhancing undergraduate and graduate curricula, supporting M.S.
1981
Abstract
study by Tunisian students, and strengthening manpower planning. The Office of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) will implement the project. To integrate U.S. technical curricula and teaching methods into Tunisian graduate and undergraduate programs, MHESR"s Directorate of Higher Education will receive TA on policy issues, e.g., degree equivalency and institutional growth patterns. Six U.S. professors visiting for 9 months will provide inservice training to Tunisian professors. Short U.S. study tours will be funded for 12 administrators and senior professors. To help the MHESR implement its plan to send 750 students for overseas technical training, short-term TA will be provided in placing students and preparing student applications. A proposed Tunisian academic affairs office in Washington, D.C., will receive long-term TA in student placement, counseling, and orientation. An interdepartmental task force will be developed to direct technical manpower planning in higher education for MHESR, identify short-term TA needs, and examine the feasibility of adapting the Manpower Office manpower planning model to MHESR"s needs. Amendment (8/83) extends the project to 6/85 and modifies its purpose slightly. Under the amended project, A.I.D. will finance 164 person-years of U.S. graduate training for about 90 persons. (PD-AAN-830) Amendment (4/84) partially funds the academic training of 377 undergraduate or graduate students (300 of them newly funded). (PD-AAR-253) Amendment (12/84) extends PACD to 2/86 and provides partial funding for the 1984-85 school year (and, funds permitting, the Fall 1985 semester), including funding for 108 new graduate and undergraduate students. English-language training and medical faculty exchanges are also funded. (PD-AAR-387) Amendment (8/85) supports 70 students initiating U.S. study. Funds will be provided directly to the GOT, which will manage the training program. (PD-AAR-836) Amendment (4/87) extends PACD to 8/89. The GOT will: limit the number of students in the program; stress graduate (especially M.S.) study; and include management, economics, agricultural economics, and related fields in the program. (PD-AAW-370) Amendment (2/88) extends PACD to 9/92 to support another 1,350 person-years of U.S. training. Funding is included for special short-term technical training as needed, and for completion of degrees began under other, terminating A.I.D. projects. (PD-AAX-681)
