Abstract
The campaign aimed to control malaria transmission through indoor residual spraying (IRS) in Nkhotakota District. The project was implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders. IRS planning and partner collaboration involved training of seasonal support staff, including supervisors, spray operators, and drivers. A total of 2,500 seasonal workers were recruited, with 1,200 being female. The workers underwent training on IRS procedures, safety protocols, and environmental compliance. The training program included both theoretical and practical sessions, with a focus on hands-on experience. Spray operations and supervision were conducted in accordance with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The campaign involved the use of two insecticides, Fludora Fusion and SumiShield 50WG. Spray quality assessment and residual efficacy monitoring were conducted to ensure the effectiveness of the insecticides. The results showed that the insecticides had a high level of efficacy, with a mortality rate of 95% for Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes. Community mobilization and engagement were critical components of the campaign. Community leaders were engaged in pre- and post-campaign activities, including community mobilization meetings and dialogue meetings. Mass media communication was also used to raise awareness about the campaign and its importance. The campaign reached a total of 1,200 communities, with a coverage rate of 95%. The campaign was monitored and evaluated through various indicators, including data collection and quality assurance, mHealth, and IRS results. The results showed a significant reduction in malaria cases, with a 30% decrease in the number of cases reported during the campaign period. The campaign also achieved a high level of coverage, with 95% of the target population reached. Despite the challenges faced during the campaign, including logistical issues and equipment failures, the project team was able to adapt and overcome these challenges. The team worked closely with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the campaign. The project also provided technical assistance to Global Fund-supported IRS districts, which helped to strengthen their capacity to implement IRS campaigns. The campaign was a success, with a significant reduction in malaria cases and a high level of coverage. The project team's ability to adapt to challenges and work closely with stakeholders was critical to the campaign's success. The project's findings and recommendations will inform future IRS campaigns in Malawi and other countries.
