Abstract
The training is divided into three days, with each day focusing on specific topics and activities. Day 1 of the training begins with a welcome and introduction session, where the trainer welcomes the participants, introduces themselves, and asks the participants to introduce themselves. The trainer then takes the participants through the Day 1 agenda and emphasizes the importance of keeping track of daily attendance using the attendance sheet provided. The QASOs are also reminded about the schools in their zones that are in treatment 1 or 2, with treatment 1 teachers implementing English only and treatment 2 teachers implementing both English and Kiswahili. The QASOs are then divided into groups of three and asked to practice teaching lessons in small groups. Each person will teach one lesson, and the others will provide feedback. The trainer emphasizes the importance of constant feedback and peer support throughout the training. The training manual outlines specific activities and exercises for each day, including phonological awareness, alphabetic principle, blending, and writing process. The trainer is expected to guide the participants through these activities, provide feedback, and facilitate group discussions. On Day 1, the trainer covers the following topics: Perky Pace, Formative feedback, Teacher's Guide and Pupil's Book Walkthrough, Sound Practice, Phonological Awareness, Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down, and Oral Blending. The trainer is expected to introduce these topics, provide examples, and facilitate group activities to reinforce the concepts. The training manual also provides a list of materials required for the training, including flip charts, markers, masking tape, participant lists, tablets, and teacher's guides. The trainer is expected to ensure that all necessary materials are available and accessible to the participants. Overall, the Tusome Early Literacy Programme QASO Training is designed to equip QASOs with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach English and Kiswahili in grade 1, 2, and 3. The training manual provides a comprehensive outline of the topics to be covered, activities to be conducted, and materials required for the training. On Day 2 of the training, the trainer covers the following topics: Silent Blending, Syllable Box, Word Study, Vocabulary, Teacher Read Aloud, Comprehension, and Retelling. The trainer is expected to introduce these topics, provide examples, and facilitate group activities to reinforce the concepts. The trainer also reviews the homework assigned on Day 1 and provides feedback to the participants. The participants are then divided into groups to practice teaching lessons, with each person teaching one lesson and the others providing feedback. On Day 3 of the training, the trainer covers the following topics: Concept Map, Sequence, Writing Process, and Putting it altogether. The trainer is expected to introduce these topics, provide examples, and facilitate group activities to reinforce the concepts. The trainer also reviews the expectations and closure of the training, emphasizing the importance of applying the skills and knowledge gained during the training in their daily practice. The participants are then provided with a final review of the training and are encouraged to ask questions and seek clarification on any topics that are unclear.
