Sign inUSAID. MISSION TO KENYA
Grant is provided through the National Council of NGOs in Kenya to the Young Muslims Association to implement the second and third phases of a project to create a consensus among Kenyan Muslims on the theological basis for participating in the country"s constitutional and electoral process.
1997

Abstract
Phase one of the project has already been completed: a 2-day workshop for Muslim scholars and opinion leaders to obtain a theological verdict on the permissibility or otherwise of Muslims engagement in the constitutional reform debate. While a consensus was developed regarding the permissibility of Muslim participation in the country, there remains a strong voice advocating the contrary. The second phase of the project will bring together both factions. The proceedings of the symposium will be published and disseminated. A third phase will sensitize key Imams, to whom the Muslim community looks for leadership, to the notion of political participation.
