Abstract
The project, funded by USAID, focuses on enhancing knowledge among women of the importance of healthy diets, particularly for children under five years in the target region. Key objectives include increasing skills among women in vegetable food production and processing, and promoting the use of nutritious and seasonally available vegetables in household diets. The project involves collaboration with various partners, including the Malian Association of Awakening Sustainable Development (AMEDD), Helen Keller International (HKI), Nutrition Division (ND), and Institut d'Economie Rurale (IER). Subawards to these partners were finalized and signed during the reporting period. The AVRDC Bamako Station has been working on revising training modules on nutrition and developing new modules on vegetable soup, mashed eggplant and onion. AVRDC is also producing 1,200 vegetable seed kits in Samanko, with various crops at different stages of development. The project has completed the hiring process for a Food and Nutrition Specialist position, which will be based in Bamako, Mali. The Nutrition Division of the Ministry of Health of Mali is developing training manuals on healthy diet, basic nutrition, and health practices. Upcoming activities include planning and implementing eight training activities for farmers in the Sikasso region, allocation of the budget to partners, and ongoing activities such as training, seed production, and development of training modules. The Food and Nutrition Specialist is expected to join the AVRDC office in Bamako on May 1, 2014, and will play a key role in the project's implementation. The project's focus on improving diet diversity and nutrient supplies is expected to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of children under five years in the target region. The project's geographic focus is on the Sikasso region in Mali, where AVRDC is working with local partners to implement the project's objectives. The project's timeframes are not explicitly stated, but the reporting period is March 2014, and upcoming activities are planned for the forthcoming reporting period. The project's recommendations and implementation details are not explicitly stated, but the project's focus on collaboration with local partners and the development of training modules and seed kits suggests a commitment to building local capacity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
