Abstract
The project will strengthen peace and reconciliation efforts in the Nyunzu, Kalemie, Manono, and Kabalo communities by increasing coexistence and social cohesion, improving livelihoods, and improving conflict mitigation mechanisms. The project will target three groups: the Batwa and Baluba communities, local institutions, and local institutions. The project design is mindful of existing gender dynamics, with a focus on empowering women to act as motivators of reconciliation and instilling a do-no-harm approach to avoid exacerbating tensions or sparking violence. During the first quarter of the project, the Program Manager and Country Director conducted civility visits to different authorities in the region, introducing and presenting a brief outline of the project and Pact's ongoing interventions. The authorities expressed their willingness to support project implementation. The project has made significant progress in implementing partner selection, finalizing the annual work plan, and starting up project activities. The recruitment process for TCMR staff is ongoing, with the Program Manager and Finance and Grants Officer already onboarded. The project has also facilitated the TCMR-USAID project launch and developed a subaward template with implementing partner selection. The security situation in the region remains a concern, with reports of armed bandits and armed bandits in the city of Kalemie and two villages. However, the project continues to operate without fear, and the authorities have expressed their willingness to support project implementation. The project has also made progress in procuring equipment and supplies, with a list of equipment procured and transported to Kalemie for use. The process of procuring a new office, security, and internet provider is ongoing.
