Abstract
The project's objective was to improve the reading skills of 1.3 million learners. The results framework consisted of two main results: Result 1 focused on strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) to deliver Early Grade Reading (EGR), while Result 2 aimed to improve retention in primary grades by promoting positive and supportive school climates and preventing School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV). To achieve these objectives, LARA implemented various activities, including training teachers and instructional leaders on EGR methodology, providing classroom pedagogical and instructional material support, and conducting Early Grade Reading Assessments (EGRAs). Additionally, the project focused on improving retention in primary grades by training school staff, community members, and pupils to prevent violence and strengthen the recognition, response, reporting, and referral processes. The LARA Resource Pack is a compilation of key documents produced under the project, providing a list of selected knowledge products, an abstract for each product, and an electronic link to the document. The pack includes teaching and learning materials, research studies, and reports that can be used and adapted for future use and improvement of reading outcomes and school climates. The resource pack is designed to provide easy access to the LARA-developed teaching and learning materials, research studies, and reports for technical staff of the Uganda MoES and primary teacher training colleges. The pack includes EGR teaching and learning materials, Journeys activity handbooks, training materials and facilitator guides, EGR and SRGBV assessment instruments, support supervision tools, and key technical briefs. The LARA monitoring, evaluation, and learning team compiled these resources, which can be freely used. However, when using these resources, it is essential to recognize the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and RTI International under the USAID/Uganda Literacy Achievement and Retention Activity. The resource pack is a valuable tool for education officials, teachers, and school staff in Uganda, providing them with a comprehensive collection of knowledge products and resources to improve reading outcomes and create positive and supportive schools. The pack can be used as a stand-alone resource or as a template for future work, and it is hoped that these products can be used and adapted for the long-term to improve reading outcomes and create positive and supportive schools. The LARA project's results framework is summarized as follows: Result 1 focused on strengthening the capacity of the MoES to deliver EGR, while Result 2 aimed to improve retention in primary grades by promoting positive and supportive school climates and preventing SRGBV. The project's objective was to improve the reading skills of 1.3 million learners, and the results framework consisted of two main results. The LARA Resource Pack provides a comprehensive collection of knowledge products and resources that can be used to improve reading outcomes and create positive and supportive schools. The pack includes teaching and learning materials, research studies, and reports that can be used and adapted for future use and improvement of reading outcomes and school climates.
