Abstract
Her career path in the energy sector has been unconventional, having initially considered a degree in literature before pursuing a degree in law. After receiving her law degree, she received a scholarship to pursue a degree in logistics and transport management in France. Upon returning to Chad, she worked for three years at the Geodis Group before realizing her true calling in law. Mariam then pursued a master's degree in economic and business law at the Gaston Berger University in Senegal, followed by a clerkship at the prestigious law firm Noubaragar Kladoumbe. She worked on banking regulations, assets, and securities during her time at the firm. In 2016, she transitioned to the energy sector when she joined Kreich Avocats as legal counsel, advising companies in areas such as petroleum and mining. Mariam's experience in the energy sector has been marked by challenges, particularly during Chad's economic crisis in 2018. However, she took on the role of Legal Adviser of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, where she reviewed contracts, interpreted laws, and represented the Ministry in negotiations. Two years later, she became the Deputy General Director of the Electric Power Sector Regulatory Authority, where she played a key role in revising the country's energy law. The revised energy law, which became effective in 2019, aims to liberalize the sector and attract private investors. Mariam notes that it is still challenging for some people to understand the new law, but she is excited about the potential for development. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Mariam advises women to join the energy sector, citing the potential and opportunities available. She emphasizes the importance of being focused and knowledgeable, and notes that there is no barrier to entry for women in the energy sector. Mariam's experience and advice serve as a testament to the potential for women to succeed in the energy sector in Africa. Her career path, marked by challenges and opportunities, demonstrates the importance of perseverance and knowledge in overcoming obstacles. As the energy sector continues to evolve in Chad and across the continent, Mariam's story serves as an inspiration to women who are considering a career in this field.
