Abstract
The main topics of the conference included the requirements of hygienic engineering and design for objects, machines, and equipment, as well as the legislation, standards, and codes of the European Union (EU) in relation to hygienic engineering and design. The conference was attended by producers and processors of fresh fruits and vegetables, representatives from government institutions such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Health, and other relevant government agencies and bodies. Presentations were made by Mr. Hubertus Lelièvre from the Netherlands, one of the founders of the European Engineering and Design Group (EHEDG), Prof. Dr. Vladimir Kakurinov, President of the Macedonian Regional Section of EHEDG, Mr. Abdulaziz Dogani, Deputy Director of the Food and Veterinary Agency, and Mr. Rumen Stamenov, Director of the State Inspectorate for Agriculture. The European legislation, with a series of Directives, prescribes that the handling, preparation, processing, and packaging of food must be carried out in a hygienic manner, using hygienically designed machines and equipment, and in hygienically designed premises. Although the Republic of Macedonia has implemented the Law on Food Safety from 2007 and transposed the EU Machinery Directive in 2009, there are still no subordinate acts that clearly regulate the codes for hygienic engineering and design. This deficiency can directly affect food producers and the implementation of existing legislation on hygienic engineering and design, according to Prof. Dr. Vladimir Kakurinov. The purpose of this conference is for all interested parties, assisted by domestic and foreign experts in this field, to discuss existing objects, machines, and equipment, as well as the needs and possibilities of fruit and vegetable producers and processors, but also existing laws and control institutions in the field of hygienic engineering and design and their scope of work in the Republic of Macedonia, as well as their approach to EU legislation and existing global standards for hygienic engineering and design. USAID, through the AgBiz Program, supports the economic growth of Macedonia through activities that improve the competitiveness of the Macedonian agribusiness. The goal is to increase the income of all participants in the selected value chains through increased exports and productivity and improvement of the business climate in agriculture.
