Agency for International Development's (USAID) private voluntary organization (PVO) partners play a pivotal role in global response efforts. PVOs bring expertise and resources to the table, making successful global aid and development outcomes a reality. They contribute to addressing complex and ongoing humanitarian crises, including earthquakes in Nepal, conflict in Syria, and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. PVOs also push forward the development agenda by working to end extreme poverty, implementing Power Africa, and supporting the Grand Challenges for Development. PVOs are essential partners in USAID's efforts to engage a variety of players to facilitate sustainable, locally driven solutions. The 637 PVOs registered with USAID as of August 1, 2015, allow the Agency to respond to vast global needs through long-standing local partnerships. PVOs received 38% of the $934 million USAID provided for the West Africa Ebola response and 33% of the $43 million USAID provided for the Nepal Earthquake response. These figures demonstrate the significant role PVOs play in USAID's responses to humanitarian crises. PVOs have extensive experience and capabilities in the development arena, making them crucial partners in USAID's efforts. They received $24.1 billion in private support, over eight times the $2.8 billion from USAID, in FY 2013. This independently generated funding provided PVOs with the capacity to leverage Agency funding and address a broader set of development needs. PVOs dedicated $21.6 billion of a total $32.9 billion in annual spending to international programs throughout 184 countries and territories, nearly every nation and region in the world. The PVO community's work with local civil society and private-sector partners ensures that assistance is inclusive, sustainable, and effective. PVOs have a broad range of expertise, with health being the major focus area in 2013, followed by humanitarian assistance and agriculture. They have a significant presence in various regions, with the majority of their spending focused on Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. PVOs' expertise and capabilities make them essential partners in USAID's efforts to address global humanitarian and development needs.
