Abstract
The main objective of the program was to improve the competitiveness of the Macedonian agricultural sector by aligning it with the requirements of the European Union (EU). The program focused on the production and marketing of vegetables, with a particular emphasis on meeting the EU's standards for production and trade. A series of training sessions were conducted for farmers in the Southeastern, Eastern, and Polog regions of Macedonia. The training sessions, which were held in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy, the State Agricultural Inspectorate, and the Federation of Farmers of the Republic of Macedonia, aimed to familiarize farmers with the EU's requirements for vegetable production and marketing. More than 300 farmers participated in the training sessions, which were conducted by the consulting firm MCG. As a result of the training sessions, four new guides were developed to assist farmers in meeting the EU's requirements for vegetable production and marketing. The guides cover topics such as agro-ecological measures, market standards for tomatoes and peppers for fresh consumption, standards for quality at the purchase of vegetables for processing, and forms of economic association of farmers - cooperatives, producer groups, and organizations of producers. The guides are intended to inform a large number of farmers - producers of vegetables, about the necessary adjustments to existing production practices to meet the EU's requirements, as well as about available national and European resources to support these processes. The guides are a result of the USAID-funded AgBiz program, which aims to establish the concept of an integrated supply chain for vegetable processing, which will enable increased productivity, competitiveness, and higher incomes for all participants in this value chain. The USAID-funded AgBiz program is part of a broader effort by the United States to support economic development and stability in Macedonia. Since 1993, the American people, through USAID, have invested over $500 million in Macedonia. USAID implements projects that create jobs, reduce corruption, and prepare Macedonian students to become a successful workforce. These initiatives improve the quality of life and support Macedonia's transition to a stable and prosperous democracy.
