Abstract
The program is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under Cooperative Agreement No. AID-OAA-A-15-00060. The report highlights the progress made in various thematic task activity areas. The program overview emphasizes the importance of addressing biodiversity conservation in Africa, with a focus on land and resource tenure rights, land use management, global change impacts, and global health linkages to biodiversity conservation. The thematic task activity areas are designed to address these key issues and promote sustainable development in Africa. Task Activity 1: Land and Resource Tenure Rights focused on improving land tenure security for local communities. The activity description highlights the need to address land tenure issues, which are critical to promoting sustainable land use and biodiversity conservation. Activity implementation progress indicates that the task activity made significant strides in promoting land tenure security, with a focus on community-led land use planning and conflict resolution. Task Activity 2: Land Use Management aimed to promote sustainable land use practices and reduce deforestation and habitat fragmentation. The activity description emphasizes the importance of integrating crosscutting issues, such as climate change and human-wildlife conflict, into land use planning. Activity implementation progress indicates that the task activity made significant progress in promoting sustainable land use practices, with a focus on community-led land use planning and agroforestry. Task Activity 3: Global Change Impacts (GCI) focused on assessing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity conservation in Africa. The activity description highlights the need to address the impacts of climate change on biodiversity conservation, including changes in temperature and precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events. Activity implementation progress indicates that the task activity made significant strides in assessing the impacts of climate change on biodiversity conservation, with a focus on developing climate-resilient conservation strategies. Task Activity 4: Global Health Linkages to Biodiversity Conservation: Population Health and the Environment (PHE) aimed to promote the health and well-being of local communities through biodiversity conservation. The activity description emphasizes the importance of addressing the health impacts of biodiversity loss, including the spread of diseases and reduced access to clean water and sanitation. Activity implementation progress indicates that the task activity made significant progress in promoting the health and well-being of local communities, with a focus on developing community-led health initiatives and promoting access to clean water and sanitation. Task Activity 4: Global Health Linkages to Biodiversity Conservation: Fresh Water Sanitation and Hygiene (FWSH) focused on promoting access to clean water and sanitation in local communities. The activity description highlights the importance of addressing the health impacts of poor water and sanitation, including the spread of diseases and reduced access to clean water. Activity implementation progress indicates that the task activity made significant strides in promoting access to clean water and sanitation, with a focus on developing community-led water and sanitation initiatives. Task Activity Area 5: Emerging Issues focused on addressing emerging issues related to biodiversity conservation, including human-wildlife conflict and climate change. The activity description emphasizes the need to address these emerging issues, which are critical to promoting sustainable development in Africa. Activity implementation progress indicates that the task activity made significant progress in addressing emerging issues, with a focus on developing climate-resilient conservation strategies and promoting community-led conflict resolution initiatives. ABCG Central Administration provided support to the thematic task activity areas, including administrative and logistical support. The activity implementation progress indicates that the central administration made significant strides in supporting the thematic task activity areas, with a focus on promoting coordination and collaboration among partners. The report concludes with a summary of planned activities for the third quarter of FY 2016, which includes continued implementation of the thematic task activity areas and promotion of coordination and collaboration among partners.
