Abstract
The program focuses on preparing students for the Liberia Primary School Certificate Examination (LPSCE). The LPSCE is a critical examination that determines a student's readiness for junior high school. The AQE-ALP program includes Saturday classes, which are additional classes held every week for 12 weeks. These classes are designed to help students review and practice the content expected to be covered on the LPSCE. The program focuses on four subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science. The materials used for the preparation of the LPSCE include a Saturday class Teacher Guide, Teacher Guides, Learner workbooks, worksheets, and topic review summary sheets. The program's objectives for the Saturday classes are to help level 3 learners prepare for the LPSCE by reviewing topics, developing study and examination-taking skills, and practicing skills and content expected to be covered on the exam. The classes are designed to be interactive, with activities that include introducing the preparation activity, reviewing key concepts, and providing practice exercises. The first week of the program focuses on reviewing the geography of Liberia, including its location, population, and size. The review procedure involves a small activity to find out what learners know about the topic, followed by a review of the topic together. Learners are given a reading assignment or additional exercises to complete on the topic at home. The program's materials include a worksheet that checks learners' prior knowledge of geography words and concepts. The worksheet includes questions such as the country located north of Liberia, the population of Liberia, and the ocean that bounds Liberia on the south. The answers to these questions are provided, along with explanations and definitions of other options. The program's approach to teaching and learning is student-centered, with a focus on developing learners' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The program's materials and activities are designed to be engaging and interactive, with opportunities for learners to ask questions and seek clarification on any concepts they do not understand. The AQE-ALP program is a critical initiative aimed at improving the quality of education in Liberia. By providing additional support to students, the program aims to improve their performance on the LPSCE and increase their chances of success in junior high school. The program's focus on developing learners' critical thinking and problem-solving skills will also benefit them in their future academic and professional pursuits. The program's implementation is overseen by the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), which has been contracted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement the AQE-ALP program. The program's success will depend on the effective implementation of its activities and the support of all stakeholders involved. The program's impact will be measured through various indicators, including the number of students who pass the LPSCE, the improvement in students' performance on the exam, and the increase in students' confidence and motivation to learn. The program's success will also be evaluated through the feedback and suggestions provided by learners, teachers, and other stakeholders involved in the program.
