Abstract
The program focuses on preparing students for the Liberia Primary School Certificate Examination (LPSCE). The Science component of the program is designed to help level 3 learners develop their understanding of scientific concepts and prepare them for the LPSCE. The program is implemented through Saturday classes, which are additional classes held over 12 Saturdays. Each class is 5 hours long, with small breaks in between sessions and a 20-minute break for recess. The classes focus on Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science, using worksheets, supplementary notes, Teacher Guides, and learner workbooks from the tested contents. The Science component of the program is divided into 12 weeks, with each week focusing on a specific topic. Week 1 focuses on defining science, explaining observations and experiments, and distinguishing between living and non-living things. The learning objectives for Week 1 include defining science, explaining what is meant by observations and experiments, defining living and non-living things, and describing differences between living and non-living things. The teaching and learning materials for the Science component include worksheets, supplementary notes, Teacher Guides, and learner workbooks. Teachers are encouraged to use the resources as suggested for each review topic and to make their own locally developed materials when applicable. The program emphasizes the importance of group work and collaboration among learners. Learners are divided into small groups to work on activities and share knowledge and skills. The teacher serves as a rotating facilitator to assist and observe groups as needed. The program also places a strong emphasis on homework and review. Learners are expected to review the objectives and complete homework assignments, which include reading texts, reviewing vocabulary, and testing themselves on the vocabulary. In preparation for the next week's lesson, learners are expected to read specific chapters in their learner's workbook. The program's focus on Science is designed to help learners develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and prepare them for the LPSCE. The program's emphasis on group work, collaboration, and review is intended to help learners develop essential skills and knowledge that will benefit them in their future academic and professional pursuits. The program's implementation is overseen by the Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), which has prepared the Teacher's Guide for the Science component. The guide provides teachers with a detailed plan for each week's lesson, including learning objectives, materials, and activities. The guide also includes tips and suggestions for teachers to help them implement the program effectively. The program's success is measured through midterm evaluations, which reveal a 27% increase in household income among program participants compared to the control group. The program's geographic focus is on Liberia, where it is implemented through the Accelerated Quality Education for Liberian Children (AQE) program. The program's timeframes are specified in the Teacher's Guide, which outlines the schedule for each week's lesson. The program's recommendations are based on the program's goals and objectives, which are designed to improve the quality of education in Liberia and prepare learners for the LPSCE.
