Abstract
3 Completion of Removal/Placement of Treated Phase I Soils and Phase II Soil Excavation and Delivery to IPTD Pile Structure was initiated in 2016. The project aimed to address environmental concerns at Danang Airport in Vietnam. The site description indicates that the airport is situated in a region with a tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures and rainfall. The project objective was to remove and treat contaminated soils, excavate and deliver new soils to the IPTD pile structure, and restore the site to a safe and environmentally compliant condition. The roles and responsibilities of the project stakeholders were clearly defined, with USAID serving as the primary funding agency, CDM International, Inc. (CDM Smith) as the construction management contractor, ECC as the environmental consultant, and IPTD Contractor as the supplier of the IPTD pile structure. Phase II excavation and backfilling activities were conducted from July 2015 to July 2016. Preconstruction activities included site preparation, excavation planning, and equipment mobilization. Excavation activities involved the removal of contaminated soils and the excavation of new soils from designated areas. Confirmation sampling and testing were conducted to ensure that the excavated soils met the required standards. The confirmation sampling and testing results showed that the excavated soils met the required standards for SA, SDD, and WA. The results also indicated that the soils met the required standards for SL, NDD, EW, and EH. Backfilling and site restoration activities were completed in July 2016, and the site was restored to a safe and environmentally compliant condition. The IPTD pile structure and pile unloading/loading activities were also completed in July 2016. The IPTD pile structure was designed to support the airport's infrastructure, and the pile unloading/loading activities involved the removal of treated material from the pile structure and the loading of new material onto the structure. The pile structure movement and readiness for Phase II were evaluated, and the results showed that the structure was ready for the next phase of the project. Milestones and handover activities were completed in July 2016, and the project was handed over to the airport authorities. Quality assurance/quality control activities were conducted throughout the project to ensure that the work met the required standards. Environmental compliance activities were also conducted to ensure that the project met the required environmental standards. Surface water sampling and project-affected water sampling activities were conducted to monitor the environmental impact of the project. The results showed that the project had a minimal impact on the surrounding environment. The project was completed on schedule and within budget, and it has contributed to the improvement of the airport's infrastructure and the reduction of environmental risks.
