The AFOLU Carbon Calculator is a simple, easy-to-use, web-based tool applicable to USAID's project portfolio.
2013 · 6 pages

Abstract
It uses sound and transparent science to estimate the impacts of USAID's land-based projects on carbon emissions. The calculator estimates the annual carbon emissions on a per-ton basis (t CO2e) and does not generate marketable carbon offsets. The tool is accessible at www.afolucarbon.org. The AFOLU Carbon Calculator assists USAID's missions and projects in estimating their climate change mitigation activities in terms of t CO2e. It provides a tiered approach to estimating carbon benefits, allowing users to choose between default data or override with project-specific data. This encourages improved monitoring and evaluation (M&E) for estimating project carbon benefits. The calculator includes various activities and tools for estimating carbon emissions and carbon sequestration. These activities include: Forest Protection, which encompasses forest conservation and protection from deforestation, illegal logging, and forest fires. Forest Management, which includes reduced-impact logging and stop logging practices. Afforestation and Reforestation, which involve planting native species and establishing plantations. Agroforestry, which includes agricultural land management and grazing land management practices. The AFOLU Carbon Calculator is designed to facilitate the estimation of carbon emissions and carbon sequestration in various land-use projects. It provides a user-friendly interface for accessing the calculator, which can be found at www.afolucarbon.org.
