Grant is provided under the Educational Support and Training project (6740302) to the Cape Teachers" Professional Association (CTPA) to expand selected outreach programs for disadvantaged South Africans: alternative curriculum development; Saturday and vacation schools; and scholarships for secondary school students.

Abstract
CTPA will conduct about four seminars per year to help teachers develop an alternative education program, particularly for history education. Objectives will be: (1) raising teachers" awareness of the need to politically and educationally empower students; (2) developing teachers" skills to plan curricular alternatives; and (3) disseminating booklets, charts, and brochures to provide teachers with stimulating media and reference materials. CTPA will conduct educational programs on Saturdays and during spring vacations to help black students prepare for secondary education. Saturday schools have been established in each of the five regions of the Western Cape for 1,700 students each year. Grant funds will be used for teacher salaries, local traveling allowances, and educational materials. Spring schools will offer a choice of a wide variety of subjects for about 1,400 students each year. Funds will cover room and board, teachers" honoraria, and educational materials. Funds will also be used to provide 120 scholarships of R250 per year to reward academic merit and community involvement of economically disadvantaged students.
