Grant to support CARE"s program to integrate family planning (FP) activities into its overall development program, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa.
1991

Abstract
The project will strengthen CARE"s institutional capacity in the FP field, test new models of FP service delivery, and increase access to FP information, services, and supplies in hard-to-reach areas. CARE has recently established FP/population as a major organizational priority. To increase CARE"s capacity in this regard, the grant will finance hiring of additional specialized staff, training of current staff, population workshops, meetings, and conferences, development of informational materials, and design of reporting and monitoring systems. CARE will implement 16 major pilot FP projects to improve improving access to quality FP services in rural areas of low contraceptive prevalence countries. Models to be tested include: (1) use of agricultural extension agents to promote FP; (2) adaptation of existing trucking and logistics systems to ensure contraceptive supply; and (3) working with cooperatives and other local groups to increase demand for and supply of modern FP methods. CARE"s will use its existing village-level development activities as a base for extending access to FP information, services, and supplies to hard-to-reach populations. Up 1,092,100 women of reproductive age (2,232,100 if Bangladesh is included as a project site) will have improved access.
