Abstract
(CODEL) to promote women"s participation in development through pilot projects in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The projects will focus on how traditional wisdom can be combined with modern technology. The first pilot project, community-based organic farming, will promote sustainable agriculture among women already engaged in farming and natural resource management in Kenya; the Kenya Institute for Organic Farming will be CODEL"s partner for this project. The second project will attempt to stimulate community organizations to work to halt desertification and deforestation in the Arusha area of Tanzania; Arusha Diocesan Development Organization will be Codel"s partner. The third will help children orphaned by AIDS in Uganda to receive an education and learn skills, such as farming; Bannakaroli Brothers will be Codel"s partner. All three projects will include: (1) local identification of needs and contributions of resources; (2) institution building of CODEL partners; and (3) forging of strong links among local groups. In addition to the pilot projects, CODEL will support a case study in an East African country of factors leading to the successful inclusion of women in community development process.
