Abstract
(AKF) to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of primary health care (PHC) programs in Africa and Asia. The project will have three components. (1) In Kenya, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, AKF will work directly with local communities and NGOs to improve their capacities to develop and implement community-based PHC programs serving a total of more than 289,000 people. (2) AKF will expand the scope of its Regional Network Program -- which aims to stimulate field-based innovation and exchange of experience on PHC issues -- from its current 5 PHC programs in 3 countries to 10 programs in 4 countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and Kenya). (3) Finally, AKF will further develop its PHC Management Advancement Program (PHC MAP), which focuses on developing information management tools for use by PHC managers. PHC MAP will develop approaches to sustainability analysis, as well as systematic training materials to supplement the management tools. PHC MAP encompasses a total of 10 PHC programs in Kenya, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Thailand (activities in Thailand are not funded by A.I.D.).
