Grant to Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) to implement a child survival program in Bangladesh, Haiti, Kenya, and Pakistan, including (1) direct patient services in 2 countries, (2) health education of mothers, and (3) preventative care promotion.
1985

Abstract
SAWSO will provide direct health services through established centers in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Primary interventions will be oral rehydation therapy, immunizations, infant growth monitoring, health and nutrition education, malaria prophylaxis, and the training of village health workers. To promote primary health care, SAWSO will train Haitian, Kenyan, and Pakistani mothers in the use of targeted interventions, emphasizing UNICEF"s GOBI approach (growth monitoring, oral rehydration therapy, breastfeeding, and immunization). SAWSO will use existing Salvation Army home leagues (women"s groups) as the framework for this woman-to-woman training program. SAWSO will promote preventative health care within the Salvation Army organizational structure by: (1) increasing collaboration between SAWSO and the Salvation Army International Headquarter"s medical department; (2) publicizing successful examples of changes in programs from curative to preventative care; and (3) using above programs as pilot/model projects to be replicated by the Salvation Army in other countries. To maximize resources, SAWSO will emphasize cooperation with government ministries, donor agencies, and private voluntary organizations.
