Abstract
A.I.D. funds will be deposited in the Rain Forest Trust Fund, which the World Bank, as Trustee, will use to support the activities of the Pilot Program, the overall purpose of which is to save the Amazon rain forest through implementation of a sustainable development approach. Major activities of the Pilot Program will include: policy development; increasing the accountability of public institutions in environmental matters; strengthening of institutions responsible for enforcing environmental laws; and supporting natural and social science research and field applications. Brazilian and non-Brazilian NGOs will be major participants in the program; other donors will include Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the Commission of the European Communities.
