Grant is provided under the regional Environmental Global Climate Change project to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to support a program to reduce Amazon deforestation in Brazil by promoting sustainable land management systems and policies.

Abstract
Under the program, WWF will: (1) do preparatory work for assessing the potential for extractive reserves in Amapa by working with NGO"s to initiate community organization, land tenure studies, and forest resource assessments; (2) improve the environmental impact assessment process in Acre by collaborating with technical experts and the environmental regulatory agency (IMAC) to develop policy objectives and guidelines; (3) strengthen the Fundacao Victoria Amazonica (FVA), a new conservation organization, and assist in determining the feasibility of two FVA conservation/research projects; (4) strengthen the capacity of selected NGO"s to influence policy by providing training, management TA, basic infrastructure and direct support for public awareness and field projects; and (5) support strategic planning and policy development by SEMA (the Special Environmental Secretariat) and IBAMA, its implementing agency, by supporting travel and TA costs.
