Abstract
Africare will construct hand-dug wells, water storage tanks, and improved pit latrines; rehabilitate rural health posts; and implement a water and hygiene community education program. Specifically, Africare will rehabilitate or hand-dig 200 wells in Beira and 10 in Chibabava District, construct 3-6 gravity-fed standpipes for Beira wells, and construct 250 water storage tanks in Beira. Community water committees will be established for each well and tank; these committees will collect user fees, which will be used for maintenance and for the purchase of chlorine. In addition, Africare will work with community members to construct 50 improved pit latrines in primary schools and technical institutions in Beira City, and 30 simple latrines in households in Chibabava District, and it will assist with community rehabilitation of 3 rural war-damaged health posts in Chibabava District. In conjunction with these activities, Africare will implement a community health education program, which will cover potable water, hygiene, and oral rehydration therapy education.
