Grant to Duke University to undertake, in cooperation with the Universities of Iowa and Hawaii, a program of comparative legislative studies, with primary emphasis on the role of legislatures in nation-building, particularly as vehicles of (or obstacles to) national integration, economic modernization, population progams, and increased political participation.

Abstract
Duke will focus on legislative influence on specific development problems (e.g., urbanization, rural development); Iowa will focus on inter-country comparative studies; and Hawaii will focus on Asian and Pacific Island countries. The grantees will develop/expand curricula offerings, train U.S. and foreign students to conduct comparative legislative studies, and sponsor various activities (symposia, publications, etc.) to arouse scholarly interest and participation in the field of comparative legislative studies. Duke will also create a legislative studies coordination office to enhance cooperation among the three participating universities.
