Abstract
This is one of several PVO projects comprising the Survival Assistance for Civilian Victims of the Civil Strife in Central America (CASA) program. ADRA"s program will focus on rural areas which have little or no access to development resources. The two major target areas will be Ocotal, which is on Nicaragua"s northern border with Honduras, and Esteli, which lies at the country"s main north-south, east- west crossroads. Primary health care will be offered to all beneficiaries by 60 community health workers (CHW"s), who will be trained to provide first aid for injuries; treatment of the most common illnesses, including malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia; preventive care, including nutrition screening, health and nutrition education, and immunizations; and home follow-up of high-risk individuals. The health teams in each area, with ADRA"s assistance, will be responsible for choosing, training, and supervising the CHW"s. Title II food supplies will be provided to complement primary health care, and will be targeted to those most in need, including pregnant and lactating mothers and those under five with second and third degree malnutrition.
