OPG to CARE to provide potable water systems and health/sanitation education in 16 villages in Orange Walk and Corozal Districts, Belize.

Abstract
The project will provide 10 wells (equipped with handpumps) and 100 pit latrines per village. Its educational activities will reach some 9,600 villagers. CARE will work closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in implementation. The project will be conducted in coordination with similar projects being implemented by the MOH and other international organizations in Belize"s southern and western districts. CARE will supervise well drilling (by MOH crews) and latrine construction (by villagers). Technical training will be provided to CARE staff and to MOH and other government personnel. There will also be village-level instruction in pump installation and maintenance and in latrine construction. Health education relating to water and sanitation will be provided. While use will be made of radio and television, emphasis will be on in-village education using established community groups. Formal, primary school, classroom training in water and sanitation will also be provided.
