Abstract
President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) under contract number GHH-I-00-07-00059-00. The project is implemented by John Snow, Inc. (JSI) in collaboration with its partners, including Broad Reach Healthcare, Encompass, LLC, International Center for Research on Women, and others. The project provides technical assistance services to the Office of HIV/AIDS and USG country teams in knowledge management, technical leadership, program sustainability, strategic planning, and program implementation support. The AIDSTAR-One project is nearing the end of its fifth year of implementation, and this annual report covers the activities undertaken as part of the FY 2012 workplan for centrally-funded activities, as well as field support-funded activities begun or continued in FY 2012. The report is divided into four main sections: project management and finance, knowledge management, major accomplishments in the centrally-funded technical areas, and major accomplishments from field support-funded activities. The project management and finance section of the report highlights the project's financial status and level of effort. The project has a total budget of $59 million, with $44 million allocated for centrally-funded activities and $15 million for field support-funded activities. The project has a team of 25 staff members, including a project director, technical advisors, and administrative support staff. The knowledge management section of the report highlights the project's efforts to share knowledge and best practices in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care. The project has developed a knowledge management system to track and share information on HIV/AIDS programs and activities. The project has also worked with countries to strengthen their HIV/AIDS treatment and care programs, including programs to provide antiretroviral therapy to people living with HIV/AIDS. The project has made significant progress in its efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, with a 27% reduction in new HIV infections among children in countries where the project has worked. The project has also made significant progress in its efforts to strengthen HIV/AIDS treatment and care programs, with a 25% increase in the number of people living with HIV/AIDS receiving antiretroviral therapy in countries where the project has worked. The project has also made significant progress in its efforts to strengthen HIV/AIDS prevention programs, with a 30% increase in the number of people reached with HIV/AIDS prevention services in countries where the project has worked.
