Abstract
The program, implemented with the financial and technical support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), seeks to transform the Kenyan dairy industry into a globally competitive, regional market leader. The overall goal of the program is to increase smallholder household income from the sale of quality milk. The program focuses on three key components: improving the business operating environment, increasing operational efficiency of smallholder dairy farmers, and enhancing the competitiveness of the dairy sector. To achieve these objectives, the program employs a market-driven value chain approach, utilizing a Business Development Services (BDS) methodology. This approach aims to improve the productivity and profitability of smallholder dairy farmers by providing them with access to quality inputs, training, and market information. During the fifth year of implementation (October 2011 - September 2012), the KDSC program continued to focus on these three components. The program's implementation team worked closely with industry stakeholders, including the Kenya Dairy Board, the Kenya Livestock Breeders Organization, and the New Kenya Cooperative Creameries, to build capacity and improve the business operating environment. The team also facilitated policy and regulatory reviews to ensure consumer safety and market expansion, particularly in the export market. The program's efforts to increase operational efficiency of smallholder dairy farmers were also significant during the fifth year. The program provided training and support to farmers on best practices in milk production, quality control, and market access. The program also established demonstration plots and provided farmers with access to quality inputs, such as feed and veterinary services. As a result, farmers were able to increase their milk yields and improve their overall productivity. The program's impact on the competitiveness of the dairy sector was also notable during the fifth year. The program worked with industry stakeholders to develop and implement a range of initiatives aimed at improving the sector's competitiveness, including the development of a dairy industry strategy and the establishment of a dairy task force. The program also provided support to smallholder dairy farmers to help them access new markets and increase their sales. The program's geographic focus was on Kenya, with a particular emphasis on the smallholder dairy farmers in the country. The program's implementation team worked closely with local stakeholders, including government agencies, industry associations, and community groups, to ensure that the program's activities were tailored to the needs of the local dairy sector. The program's timeframes were October 2011 to September 2012, during which the program's implementation team made significant progress in achieving the program's objectives. The program's recommendations for future implementation were also outlined in the report, including the need to continue building capacity and improving the business operating environment, as well as increasing operational efficiency and competitiveness of the dairy sector. The program's budget execution was also a key aspect of the report, with the program's implementation team providing detailed information on the program's financial performance during the fifth year. The report also included a range of annexes, including a list of acronyms, a list of tables and figures, and a list of references.
