Abstract
The program is focused on developing a forest biomass and carbon stock and MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) system in the region. The project is being implemented by GeoEcoMap Inc. under subcontract number EEP-I-00-06-00013-00-GEM-00. The baseline assessment of deforestation and degradation in project areas is a critical component of the BIOREDD+ Program. The assessment is focused on collecting data on historical changes in forest cover in the Pacific Coastal Region of Colombia. The data is being collected using multi-temporal ALOS-PALSAR data, JERS imagery, Landsat data, and GeoSAR data. The objective of the assessment is to develop a methodology to track and quantify forest cover change in the region. The assessment is being conducted in two phases. The first phase involves the collection and processing of data from various sources, including ALOS-PALSAR, JERS, Landsat, and GeoSAR. The data is being used to create a detailed map of land cover change at a resolution of 0.25-1.0 ha. The second phase involves the analysis of the data to estimate the area of previously deforested and degraded land in the region. The assessment has identified significant areas of deforestation and degradation in the Pacific Coastal Region of Colombia. The data shows that the majority of deforestation and degradation has occurred in the Uraba and Choco regions. The assessment also highlights the importance of forest cover in maintaining ecosystem services and biodiversity in the region. The results of the assessment are presented in tables and maps, which provide a detailed overview of the extent and distribution of deforestation and degradation in the region. The data is being used to inform the development of the forest biomass and carbon stock and MRV system in the region. The assessment has also identified areas of high conservation value, including the Uraba and Choco regions, which are home to a diverse range of plant and animal species. The data is being used to inform the development of conservation strategies and policies in the region. The BIOREDD+ Program is being implemented in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Colombian government, local communities, and international organizations. The program is being funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under task order number AID-514-TO-11-00002. The assessment has provided valuable insights into the extent and distribution of deforestation and degradation in the Pacific Coastal Region of Colombia. The data is being used to inform the development of the forest biomass and carbon stock and MRV system in the region, and to inform conservation strategies and policies. The assessment has also highlighted the importance of forest cover in maintaining ecosystem services and biodiversity in the region.
