Abstract
The violence was fueled by extremist groups promoting divisive messages that challenged the long-held beliefs of peaceful coexistence among different religious and ethnic groups. As part of the "I am Burkina" activity, BFRP partnered with a local video and graphics company to produce a public service announcement emphasizing the importance of community unity, peaceful coexistence, and preventing stigmatization of social groups. The multimedia series featured seven customary and religious authorities, artists, and sports stars who recorded personal messages promoting social cohesion. These messages were disseminated through social media channels and online platforms. The interactive portion of the activity saw a significant turnout from the elderly, women, and youth population from different ethnic and religious groups. BFRP was able to reach more than 1,400 community members, raising awareness on social cohesion and creating an open atmosphere to discuss a sense of unity and belonging. Community members, including a female community leader, emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and action to strengthen social cohesion. The "I am Burkina" activity aimed to counter the divisive messages of extremist groups by promoting a sense of unity and belonging among the community. By engaging local leaders and influencers, BFRP sought to create a platform for open discussion and awareness-raising on social cohesion. The activity's focus on community unity and peaceful coexistence was critical in addressing the root causes of inter-ethnic violence in the region. The success of the "I am Burkina" activity was evident in the significant turnout and engagement of community members from different ethnic and religious groups. By promoting social cohesion and preventing stigmatization, BFRP contributed to a more inclusive and peaceful environment in the northern regions of Burkina Faso. The activity's impact was felt through the creation of a sense of unity and belonging among community members, which was critical in addressing the challenges posed by extremist groups.
