Abstract
The region has been plagued by attacks from extremist organizations, leading to increased fears of further cleavages among communities. To address this issue, BFRP collaborated with a platform of civil society organizations to bring together various religious leaders for an Iftar celebration during Ramadan. This event provided a space for leaders to openly discuss the importance of peace, solidarity, and social cohesion. During the Iftar celebration, religious leaders shared a meal together and engaged in dialogue aimed at denouncing violent extremism in the Est region. In addition to the Iftar celebration, leaders visited vulnerable populations to deliver sanitary supplies such as hand sanitizer and face coverings, demonstrating their solidarity and support during the COVID-19 pandemic. The leaders also recorded radio messages calling on their fellow citizens to not stigmatize those who are different, but to see all people in their community as brothers and sisters who are members of the same family and nation. A key message from a religious representative emphasized the importance of faith in promoting peaceful coexistence among communities. He stated that faith should never lead to disarray, dissatisfaction, or destabilization among communities. This message resonated with community members, who saw the initiative as a decisive step toward social unity and stability. The activity served as a springboard for community members to come together to overcome shared difficulties. The BFRP's initiative in Est region demonstrated the potential of interfaith dialogue in promoting social cohesion and stability. By bringing together religious leaders and providing a platform for them to share their messages, the program helped to reduce suspicion and dispel stereotypes among different ethnic and religious groups. The initiative also highlighted the importance of community-led initiatives in promoting peace and stability in the region. The success of the BFRP's initiative in Est region has implications for similar initiatives in other parts of the country. By promoting interfaith dialogue and community-led initiatives, programs can help to reduce tensions and promote social cohesion among different ethnic and religious groups. This approach can also help to build resilience against extremist ideologies and promote peaceful coexistence among communities.
