Grant to Foster Parents Plan (PLAN) to support child survival and primary health care (PHC) activities in Bolivia and Mali.
1986

Abstract
In Bolivia, two projects - serving 242 communities - will seek to increase child survival through immunization, oral rehydration therapy, and nutrition enhancement. Both projects will: (1) train PLAN social and health promoters in growth monotoring, oral rehydration therapy, hygiene, sanitation and pre/post-natal care; (2) recruit and train community health coordinators; (3) organize community health committees; (4) strengthen cold chain facilities; (5) and provide undernourished children (0-5 years) with multi-vitamins and traditional foods. In one of the communities, PLAN will also work for disease and parasite control, providing necessary drugs at 30% of cost. In Mali, PLAN, in coordination with the Ministry of Health and the National Immunization Center, will vaccinate children in 205 villages against six major preventable diseases. In the first project year, a mobile team will vaccinate children (0-6 years), coordinating activities with 15 trained health agents who will assist in community organization, registration, and follow-up. In years 2-5, vaccination efforts will focus on the newborn and on children missed during the initial vaccination campaign. Other possible activities in years 2-5 include providing: (1) financial support to a nutrition program; (2) vitamins and medicines to 19 PLAN villages and 4 arrondissements; (3) PHC training to 8 village health workers and 10 traditional midwives; and (4) basic equipment to 5 rural maternal health centers and dispensaries.
