Abstract
The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the local economy and food security conditions in the municipality. The diagnostic process involved the active participation of municipal technicians, particularly those working in the Direction Municipal de Planificación (DMP) and Oficina Municipal de la Mujer (OMM), as well as representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) related to economic activities and food security. Additionally, the sectoral economic local, including micro-entrepreneurs, farmers, and members of economic organizations, contributed to the study. A team of 8 technical consultants, 2 specialists, and 1 coordinator, all under the direction of the Especialista DEL del Proyecto Nexos Locales, facilitated the diagnostic process. A small informatics tool, ELSA (Economía Local y Seguridad Alimentaria), was developed to process the collected information and construct indicators of the situation, allowing for the projection of potential interventions. The diagnostic study was conducted from June to September 2015, coinciding with the final stage of the presidential election campaign. Despite some difficulties, including date changes and limited participation from key individuals and sectors, the study was completed as planned. The study's methodology involved the use of a "hoja electrónica" (electronic sheet) to collect and process data. This tool allowed for the creation of indices representing the situation of each variable studied, providing a visual representation of the municipality's conditions and potential future interventions. The diagnostic study is a contribution to the municipality's planning and strategy development, aiming to address the local problems and challenges. The study's findings and recommendations are expected to be useful for the municipality's development, particularly in the areas of economic development and food security. The municipality of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango has a rich cultural heritage and a strong tradition of agriculture. The local economy is primarily based on subsistence farming, with a significant portion of the population engaged in small-scale agriculture. However, the municipality faces challenges related to poverty, limited access to markets, and inadequate infrastructure. The diagnostic study highlights the importance of addressing these challenges to improve the municipality's economic development and food security conditions. The study's recommendations focus on strengthening the local economy, improving access to markets, and enhancing the municipality's infrastructure. The study's findings indicate that the municipality has a high level of poverty, with a significant portion of the population living below the poverty line. The local economy is characterized by a high level of informality, with many households engaged in subsistence farming and small-scale entrepreneurship. The diagnostic study also highlights the importance of addressing the municipality's food security challenges, including limited access to nutritious food and inadequate nutrition. The study's recommendations focus on improving access to nutritious food, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture practices. In conclusion, the diagnostic study of the municipality of Santo Tomás Chichicastenango provides a comprehensive understanding of the local economy and food security conditions.
