Abstract
EGRA provides technical assistance to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) in implementing teacher education support and materials development. The program targets teacher trainers, teachers, school administrators, and other key members in 11 districts, with a focus on improving literacy skills at the lower primary level. To improve early grade reading, EGRA and MoEST are implementing an early grade literacy program in Chichewa and English in these 11 districts. The program focuses on developing basic literacy skills and knowledge, and provides training to teachers, head teachers, and education advisors on how to effectively teach reading in the early grades. An additional focus is the use of supplementary readers in Chichewa and English to strengthen reading skills and develop a love of reading. The training manual for this program is a product of collaboration among government officials, scholars, practitioners, and development professionals. The manual is designed to improve literacy attainment for learners in the primary grades, and provides guidance on managing the stock of readers, using supplementary readers for reading and for children to take home to read with parents and in community reading centers. The training program is divided into 13 sessions, each focusing on a specific aspect of teaching reading with supplementary readers. The sessions cover topics such as identifying challenges in using supplementary readers, managing the stock of readers, and teaching learners with reading difficulties. The program also includes sessions on using supplementary readers for home and community reading, and on differentiated group reading. The training manual is designed to be used by teacher trainers, teachers, and other key members in the 11 districts. The manual provides a comprehensive guide to teaching reading with supplementary readers, and is intended to improve literacy skills and knowledge for learners in the lower primary level.
