USAID. BUR. FOR ASIA. OFC. OF EAST ASIAN AFFAIRS
Project to expand East Asia"s professional and technical human resource base by providing academic, nonacademic, and technical U.S., third-country, and in-country training.
1993

Abstract
A contractor will implement the project. Over a 5-year period, the project will train approximately 2,400 persons from Cambodia, Mongolia, Thailand, displaced Burmese in Thailand, and other East Asian countries authorized by A.I.D./W. Estimates of the number of participants by training category are as follows: (1) U.S. Master"s level training -- 142 participants; (2) short-term technical or special U.S. training (non-degree) -- 144 participants; (3) long-term third-country (Asian) training -- 144; (4) short-term third country technical or special training -- 360; (5) in-country workshops and seminars -- 700; and (6) regional workshops and seminars -- 776. A illustrative list of training areas includes engineering, health care, business administration, economics, education, rural development, public administration, energy, entrepreneurship, agriculture, and environmental sciences. The number of participants, training venues, and specific training objectives will be determined by USAID field Missions, which will prepare multi-year rolling training plans -- if possible in coordination with the host country and local institutions. Attention will given to recruiting women and individuals from the private sector. Long-term trainees will be asked to complete one general management course and one financial management course so that they are prepared for the supervisory positions they will hold upon return. In addition, English-language training will be an integral part of the program.
