Abstract
According to the Base de datos SE-MIDEH, 2017, there are 26,166 educational centers in Honduras, with 21,035 being government-run centers. Of these, 4,066 are bidocenters (serving two grade levels) and 8,420 are unidocenters (serving one grade level). Research has shown that despite the challenges faced by multigrade schools, some of these schools have achieved high levels of success in teaching reading and writing skills. For example, a study by Diaz Quintero in 2008 found that some multigrade schools in Honduras had achieved high scores in reading and writing tests, despite the limited resources and infrastructure available to them. This study highlighted the need for the Curriculum Nacional Básico to be adapted to the needs of multigrade schools, and for teachers to receive training and support to improve their teaching practices. A more recent study, Escuelas multigrados en Honduras: Estrategias y oportunidades para mejorar la lectoescritura inicial, aims to identify and describe effective teaching strategies used by teachers in multigrade schools in Honduras. The study also seeks to systematize and socialize good practices in teaching reading and writing skills in multigrade schools. The researchers recommend that the results of this study be shared with other educational institutions in rural areas, and that the findings be used to inform policy and decision-making at the national and regional levels. The study also highlights the importance of teacher training and support in improving teaching practices in multigrade schools. The researchers recommend that teacher training programs be adapted to meet the needs of multigrade schools, and that teachers receive ongoing support and professional development to improve their teaching skills. In terms of geographic focus, the study is focused on Honduras, a country in Central America with a high number of multigrade schools. The study's findings have implications for educational policy and practice in Honduras and other countries in the region. The study's methodology involves a review of existing literature and data, as well as case studies of successful multigrade schools in Honduras. The researchers used a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative data to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by multigrade schools in Honduras. Overall, the study aims to contribute to the development of effective teaching strategies and policies for multigrade schools in Honduras, and to improve the reading and writing skills of students in these schools.
