Abstract
This strategy aimed to reduce deforestation and forest pressure in the country, particularly in the province of Sucumbíos. The initiative was supported by the Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by a consortium of organizations, including the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) and the Coordinadora de las Organizaciones Indígenas de la Cuenca Amazónica (COICA). The strategy identified several causes of deforestation in Sucumbíos, including the expansion of agricultural land, logging, oil extraction, mining, and road construction. To address these causes, the strategy proposed several lines of action, including the development of sustainable agriculture practices, the implementation of forest conservation measures, and the promotion of eco-tourism. The strategy also identified several key actors involved in deforestation, including the government, indigenous communities, small-scale farmers, and large-scale agricultural producers. To engage these actors, the strategy proposed the establishment of several working groups, including a Mesa de Gobiernos Autónomos Descentralizados (MAD) and a Mesa de Control o Consejo de Seguridad Ciudadana (MCC). The strategy also proposed the implementation of several sub-estrategies, including the development of agreements with local authorities, the establishment of forest conservation measures, and the promotion of sustainable forest management practices. These sub-estrategies aimed to reduce deforestation and promote sustainable forest management in Sucumbíos. The implementation of the strategy was to be overseen by a Mesa del Ejecutivo o Gabinete Provincial, which would be responsible for coordinating the efforts of the various actors involved. The strategy also proposed the establishment of a monitoring and evaluation system to track progress and identify areas for improvement. Overall, the Estrategia Consensuada con autoridades de gobierno para reducir la deforestación y presión sobre el bosque in Ecuador aimed to reduce deforestation and promote sustainable forest management in the province of Sucumbíos. The strategy proposed several lines of action, including the development of sustainable agriculture practices, the implementation of forest conservation measures, and the promotion of eco-tourism.
