Abstract
The system relies on a network of satellites orbiting the Earth, which transmit accurate time and location information to GPS receivers on the ground. These receivers, such as handheld devices like the Garmin GPSMap62, use this information to determine their precise location and track movement history. The GPS system consists of multiple satellite constellations, with 24 satellites currently in orbit. These satellites send signals to GPS receivers, which use the signals to calculate their location. A minimum of three satellites is required to determine a 2D location on the Earth's surface, while four or more satellites are needed for 3D location accuracy. GPS receivers compare the time a signal is received to the time it was transmitted from a satellite to determine their location. Sources of GPS error can significantly impact the accuracy of location tracking. Reflection, where the GPS signal bounces off large buildings or rocks, can cause position errors. The number of satellites available also affects accuracy, as a minimum of three satellites is required for 2D location tracking. Terrain and dense foliage can block signal reception, leading to position errors or no position reading at all. GPS units typically do not work indoors, underwater, or underground due to signal interference. GPS receivers can provide a range of functions, including providing the user's location on the planet, indicating speed, and helping to find a specific location. They can also record movement history and display the time. In addition to these basic functions, GPS receivers can be used in a variety of ways, such as working indoors, operating without batteries, and being used like a telephone. Some GPS units can even act as emergency beacons, take photographs, and provide additional features. The Garmin GPSMap62, a handheld GPS receiver, features a simple and user-friendly interface. The unit is waterproof and shockproof, making it suitable for use in a variety of environments. The GPSMap62 has an accuracy of +/- 3 meters, making it a reliable tool for navigation and location tracking.
