Abstract
This partnership is formed to achieve a specific goal, and it involves shared accountability is critical. The partnership model can be an integral part of reaching objectives, as no single donor, organization, or country can address all health needs. Improving health outcomes in Global Health Initiative program areas is a shared responsibility. The ultimate goal of the U.S. Government's Global Health Initiative is for the partner country to plan, oversee, manage, deliver, and finance a national health program response based on the needs of those living within its borders. The U.S. Government coordinates, collaborates, and partners with others to achieve the following objectives: increased effectiveness and efficiency, increased scalability, increased sustainability through greater country ownership, increased equity through better access, and increased mutual accountability. Country Support is a key element in strengthening country ownership. Each partner should be committed to supporting the partner country in planning, overseeing, managing, delivering, and financing a national health program response. The joint vision, goals, and strategy should be supported by each partner, and a clear structure for inclusive and joint decision making, representation, transparency, and accountability should be in place. A strong strategic planning document and a mutually-agreed upon performance and evaluation framework are essential for large partnerships. The Global Health Partnership involves various types of partners, including Ministries of Health and other government bodies, bilateral, multilateral, and regional organizations, private philanthropic organizations, civil society, academic and research institutions, and the private sector. The partnership also includes special U.S. Government initiatives. The Saving Mothers, Giving Life Partnership is a specific example of a partnership that engages founding partners to co-invest in Saving Mothers, Giving Life programs by filling critical gaps. The partnership leverages the strengths, experience, methodologies, and resources of its partners to foster a game-changing approach that strengthens the health systems of targeted geographic areas in the developing world and reduces maternal mortality. The Saving Mothers, Giving Life Partnership involves founding partners, including the Global Health Initiative, the Government of the United States, Merck for Mothers, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Every Mother Counts. The partnership aims to leverage the strengths and resources of its partners to foster a game-changing approach that strengthens the health systems of targeted geographic areas in the developing world and reduces maternal mortality.
