The program's scope encompasses the entire health supply chain, from procurement to distribution and use of medicines. In Year 5, Quarter 1, the program achieved significant milestones. The selection and use of medicines were improved through the implementation of health technology assessments and the strengthening of pharmaceutical and therapeutics committees. The program also supported the optimization of the supply chain by transitioning to a new logistics management information system and improving demand and supply planning. The program's governance structure was strengthened through the establishment of a contracting and contract management unit, which ensured that contracts were awarded to qualified suppliers. The program also improved workforce management by providing training and capacity-building programs for health workers. In terms of information systems, the program implemented a master medicine data system, which enabled the tracking and monitoring of medicine availability and stock levels. The program also established a national surveillance center, which provided real-time data on medicine availability and stock levels. The program's financial management was improved through the implementation of a new budgeting process, which ensured that provinces had a clear understanding of their budget allocations. The program also improved financial reporting and compliance, ensuring that provinces were able to track their expenditures and report on their financial performance. The program's response to the COVID-19 pandemic was also a key focus area. The program provided support to the government of South Africa in its response to the pandemic, including the procurement and distribution of personal protective equipment and medical consumables.
