Abstract
The project is implemented in several countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, and focuses on addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by this age group. The project's goal is to promote healthy behaviors, improve reproductive health knowledge, and enhance social and emotional well-being among very young adolescents. The Growing Up GREAT! intervention is a key component of the Passages Project, designed to support the development of very young adolescents in a holistic manner. The intervention package includes a range of activities and components, such as caregiver training, peer support groups, and community-based initiatives. The program is implemented in partnership with community-based organizations, schools, and healthcare providers. Research and program learning are integral to the Growing Up GREAT! intervention. The project employs a theory of change approach, which involves identifying the underlying assumptions and mechanisms that drive the intervention's impact. The learning lab is a key component of this approach, providing a space for researchers and program implementers to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and develop solutions. Implementation of the Growing Up GREAT! intervention occurs at multiple levels, including individual, community, and institutional levels. The program is designed to be adaptable to different contexts and settings, and implementation is facilitated through a range of actors and activities, including community health workers, teachers, and healthcare providers. Evaluation and learning studies are conducted to assess the impact and effectiveness of the Growing Up GREAT! intervention. The studies employ a range of methods, including quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to gather data on the program's outcomes and implementation. The findings from these studies are used to inform program improvement and scale-up. The Growing Up GREAT! intervention has been found to have a positive impact on the health and well-being of very young adolescents. The program has been shown to improve reproductive health knowledge, enhance social and emotional well-being, and reduce gender-based violence. The intervention has also been found to have a positive impact on caregiver connectedness and communication with others about reproductive health. Scaling up the Growing Up GREAT! intervention is a key priority for the Passages Project. The project is working with partners to develop a scalable and sustainable model that can be implemented in multiple contexts and settings. The scale-up process involves identifying key actors and activities, developing a clear implementation plan, and establishing a monitoring and evaluation system to track progress. Overall, the Growing Up GREAT! intervention is a critical component of the Passages Project, aimed at improving the health and well-being of very young adolescents. The program's holistic approach, research-based design, and adaptable implementation strategy make it an effective tool for promoting healthy behaviors and reducing health disparities among this vulnerable population.
